Cycling to the coast
Last week, Thomas had an idea. A cycletrip from our home to Oostende, the most central coastcity of Belgium, and back. Good idea I thought. I had to practice my cycle skills a bit more so it came at a good moment. It also was a bank holiday, so time enough to sleep afterwards.
We followed the canal to Brugge. A quiet road along the water with some dusty parts brought us there in no time. After the slower part crossing Brugge, we took the canal Brugge-Oostende which gave us a fast pace again. After a short cookiestop we reached a cobblestone section about 10km from our destination in front of a pub. There it went all wrong. I heard Thomas shouting 'stop, stop'... an saw him flying off his bike and falling onto the ground. Luckily he wasn't hurt much, only some scratches at the knee and leg, but the handlebar of his bike had broken loose from the frame and fork. So, no chance of going further with that bike. After some phonecalls his girlfriends uncle came to pick him up by car.
So I stood there alone, but with an incomplete mission . I still had to cycle to Oostende. It wasn't far anymore. I went in 'aeroposition' in my triathlonbars and half an hour later I rung the doorbell of my uncle. After a refreshment and lunch I met with Thomas at seaside, near the lighthouse, who felt much better by then.
Around 4 pm I jumped back on my bike and rode to my barn called Home. It went fast, but the final couple of kilometer were pretty tough. Luckily I had enough food and water to complete the trip in a comfortable way, although, my but says different things about its comfort...
